Guinee Bissau: The real struggle

February 06, 2017

The 2015 IMF report places Guinea-Bissau at the eleventh place among the poorest countries in the world. This ranking clearly summarizes the level of poverty in this country. The unstable political context, marked by several coups d'état brakes the economic reconstruction of the country.

In 2010, studies of the West African Economic and Monetary Union showed that 69.3% of the population is very poor.

Poverty in the country is reflected in the inaccessibility of populations to basic social services such as education and health. Many families are unable to provide 1 meal a day, especially in the Gabou and Cacheu areas where poverty is very high. The poor mostly operate in the agricultural sector with very rudimentary means. And yet the country has a very good rainfall and important natural resources almost unexploited.

Poverty is gaining ground in Senegal. In cities as well as in rural areas, the living conditions of more than half of the country's population are extremely difficult. You can often see families who cannot afford two meals a day. The latest IMF poverty report in 2015 places Senegal among the world's 25 poorest countries.

In 2014, after the surveys of the poverty index in the country, the National Agency of Statistics and Demography of Senegal revealed that 56.5% of the population considered themselves poor.In Dakar, the capital of Senegal, 45.7% of households are poor and 24.7% among them are very poor. Food insecurity affects 50% of Senegalese.

The situation in rural areas is critical with 69% of poverty-stricken families and 54.8% of them affected by lack of food. With this dramatic situation, it is urgent to do something to provide assistance to needy families.
